Student Sponsorships in Muwayo
The Muwayo Nursery and Primary School began in the spring of 2017, with the construction of a very temporary structure and four teaching staff. In that first term, 85 students were enrolled. In the second term, completed at the end of August, 2017, 101 students were enrolled.
In the spring of 2018, the first permanent building was completed, for two classrooms, and enrollment grew to 237, with a teaching staff of 7 and a total staff of 11.
Two additional classroom buildings are planned, with construction beginning on the first of these buildings in the summer of 2018.
To enroll a child, parents are responsible to help with some of the school expenses and must pay school fees of around $35/term for registration ($3), school uniform ($14), learning materials and pens ($6), meals ($9), and first aid supplies ($3). While this seems a relatively low cost, in a subsistence economy with an average per capita income of less than $1/day, many parents have been unable to afford even this low level of school expense. Community for Humanity is helping to arrange student sponsorships to bridge this gap, and to pay for the additional expenses required to operate the school, including the teacher salaries and other staff wages, books, and to pay for the facility itself. All of these expenses can be met if sponsors can be found for each of the students, and are able to pay $75 per term per student. For one school year (three terms), a sponsor can fully support a child’s education for $225.
We encourage student sponsors to establish a friendship with each young person they are sponsoring in Muwayo. When you sponsor a specific student, you will receive a photo of that student, basic biographical information, periodic updates on that student’s progress, and will have an opportunity to communicate directly with that student.
