Haiti does have a free public education system, but over 75% of the schools in Haiti are fee-based private/parochial schools. Even though public education is free, only about 65% of primary-aged children and 55% of secondary aged children are enrolled in any school, and only about 60% of the students enrolled in school will complete a secondary program.

Student Sponsorships

Community for Humanity has partnered with Top Plus to establish student sponsorships and to provide school materials to students are unable to pay the school fees and/or materials fees required for attendance at a private or parochial Haitian school.

We encourage our student sponsors to establish a friendship with each young person they are sponsoring in Pignon, Haiti. When you sponsor a specific student, you will receive periodic updates on that student’s progress, and will have an opportunity to communicate directly with that student.

School fees range from $250 to $400 per year per student, depending on grade level, and pay for teacher salaries, books and other materials, and the school uniforms and shoes required by most Haitian schools.

School Materials Program

In Haiti, students are expected to buy their own school materials for  the year, and this puts a financial burden on many families.  Top Plus is seeking support of 160 students in Pignon area schools who are unable to afford the cost of school materials for the year.  The materials for each student include:  a French dictionary, notebooks, pens, pencils, geometric tools, and a school bag.  The cost of materials for one student for the school year is $35.
