Pignon is a district of about 30,000 inhabitants in the northern Central Plateau of Haiti, about a four hour drive north from Port au Prince. The town of Pignon sits in a beautiful expansive valley surrounded by mountains, at the base of a large peak that bears the same name.
Pignon is one of Haiti’s top producers of sugarcane and alcohol (clarin) used to manufacture rum. Many families in Pignon survive by growing their own food and by producing sugarcane for market, in small plots outside of the town.
In Pignon, Community for Humanity has partnered with the Top Plus organization. Top Plus contributes to the development of Pignon in many ways, including:
well drilling and pit latrine construction,
food distribution in area of severe food shortage,
housing (in partnership with the Fuller Center for Housing),
non-interest microloans for small farms and other small business development, and
student scholarships and school materials assistance for the children of Pignon.
